Pets are a wonderful addition to most any home where the owners will take care of them, provide them with food, not train them to attack people, and generally treat them with some kindness and appreciate for their well-being. There are millions of homes in the United States that have dogs or cats as pets in their homes.

Nearly 39 million households in the United States own cats. And the number of people who own dogs runs about 60 or 70 million, according to one statistics. Americans treasure their pets, treating them as part of the family, feeding them good meals and making sure they have all the things they need.

Dogs are often called “man’s best friend.” Dogs are generally happy and fun creatures to be around. They run around, jump on things, get taken for walks, chew on things, including toys and furniture, but are always there to greet their owners when they return home from work. They are playful animals and bring a lot of happiness to others.

Dogs are known for their ability to have fun and “bring joy” to others through their companionship. They also make great protectors, protecting their owners from harm, whether that harm comes in the form of an intruder or another dog. They are sweet and cuddly until a person threatens the family. Then they become aggressive.

Dogs smell fear and use it sometimes to their advantage in a kind of defense situation, where the person or the home needs to be defended from a person or an intruder or another animal. Dogs can bite people, though sometimes the person that is bitten is a person who is no threat to the family. This can often lead to a dog being “put down.”

Dogs involve themselves in activities that are a “nature to their being.” For instance, border collies like to herd animals and children. Rottweilers like to growl and tear things up. Pitbulls can be aggressive. Hunting dogs like to hunt. Tracking dogs like to track. Golden retrievers like to play fetch.

Cats are animals that millions of households have. They are generally independent creatures, much more independent than dogs, but still needing attention every now and again, especially when they have been alone for some time. Cats generally clean themselves up by bathing themselves and filing down their claws.

Cats as creatures love to be played with. Cats have the ability to chase objects around or hunt for a very long time. They can be amused by hanging objects or be sudden light that moves around in different areas, which is the cause with objects like a mirror.

Cats amuse themselves generally with toys, while a dog usually needs to be played with. Cats also don’t get outside unless they are an outside cat and therefore often don’t need medical assistance the way a dog does, as a dog stays outside often, to play fetch and to run around.

With either animal, recommendations are that they should be taken to the veterinarian at least once a year when they are young and twice a year for older pets. There are some statistics surrounding pets and their need to be taken to the veterinarian. They are in the following section.

  • You’ll need to bring your kitten or puppy in for vaccines every 3 to 4 weeks until he’s 16 weeks old.
  • It’s estimated 80% of dogs and 70% cats show signs of dental disease by age three, leading to abscesses, loose teeth, and chronic pain.
  • Forbes Magazine reported that 92% of pet owners spent the same or more on their pets during the most recent recession period.

Fleas can present a huge problem when it comes to animals. They can get inside a dog’s or cat’s hair and jump around, as well as cause diseases. Some statistics about fleas are notable in the following section. They may have many terms associated with them, such as veterinary options, veterinary services, a veterinary specialty center, and others.

The statistics are in the next article. Pet hospitals are important for dealing with pet illnesses that come on suddenly and are an emergency. Pet hospitals employ technicians who are skilled in the signs of a pet emergency. Pet hospitals provide a deductible for those that have insurance. Pet hospitals are helpful.
